Even hot and cold temperatures bring their own factors to consider when it’s time to shoot. Understanding how different weather conditions affect fireworks will help you plan ahead and create a better show experience.
Can You Shoot Fireworks in the Rain?
Shooting in the rain doesn’t mean your fireworks won’t work, but keeping them dry is important. Fireworks commonly use paper, cardboard, and other materials that aren’t designed to become saturated, and moisture can interfere with exposed fuses and ignition.
If rain is in the forecast, keep your fireworks protected and dry until you’re ready to use them. Heavy rain is a different story, especially if your fireworks become soaked. Never try to open, modify, repair, or shoot a firework that appears damaged by water.
How Does Wind Affect Fireworks?
Wind can have a major impact on both the appearance and safety of your fireworks display. Once an aerial firework bursts, wind can blow the stars, sparks, smoke, and fallout in a particular direction. This can make effects appear stretched or cause them to drift.
A light breeze can help clear smoke, but stronger winds can create problems. Always pay attention to wind direction and conditions where you’re shooting, and make sure your audience is a safe distance from the launch area.
Does Humidity Affect Fireworks?
Humidity has less of an immediate effect than rain or wind, but it can still change the way a fireworks display looks. On humid, still evenings, smoke may linger around the firing area instead of dispersing. As more fireworks are fired, that haze can make later effects harder to see.
Moisture becomes a bigger concern when fireworks are exposed to damp conditions for an extended period. For the night of your display, the main priority is keeping the fireworks themselves dry.
Can Fog Affect a Fireworks Display?
Fog and low clouds can have a big impact on how well you can see aerial fireworks. Effects that burst above or within a low cloud layer may appear muted, blurry, or disappear from view altogether.
Smoke from the fireworks can also add to the problem. On a foggy, still night, smoke may linger and further obscure the display. The fireworks may be functioning as intended, but the audience might not get the full visual effect.
Do Hot or Cold Temperatures Affect Fireworks?
Normal summer heat doesn’t automatically prevent fireworks from performing properly. However, hot and dry weather can create another concern: dry grass and vegetation. During especially dry periods, the risk of starting a fire may be elevated and local fireworks restrictions or burn bans may be put in place.
Cold weather doesn’t necessarily prevent fireworks from working either. Snow, sleet, and other wet conditions are generally more important concerns because they introduce moisture. No matter the temperature outside, keeping fireworks dry and following their instructions is still a top priority.

The ideal conditions for fireworks are generally dry weather, good visibility, and manageable winds. Dry conditions help protect the fireworks from moisture, clear skies make aerial effects easier to see, and a light breeze can help move smoke away from the display. That doesn’t mean the weather has to be perfect. What matters is whether the conditions allow the fireworks to be used according to their instructions and with the necessary safety precautions. Always consider the conditions at your firing location and follow local laws and restrictions.
