How to Dispose of Fireworks Safely

Fireworks are a fun way to bring people together and celebrate special occasions. Whether it’s the Fourth of July, a gender reveal, or a summer BBQ, they create an experience everyone will remember. However, firework safety doesn’t stop when the smoke settles. Properly disposing of used fireworks is essential to preventing fires, injuries, and accidents.
Follow these simple steps after shooting off fireworks to make sure everyone stays safe.
1. Let Them Cool
After shooting, resist the urge to clean up right away. Used fireworks can stay extremely hot for a while after going off. Allow your fireworks to sit for at least 15-20 minutes so they can cool. Taking a short break before cleaning up can prevent burns and reduce the risk of reigniting any materials.
Tip: If you notice any box fires, put them out immediately with water or a fire extinguisher.
2. Soak or Douse Thoroughly
Water is your best defense against fireworks that may still be active. If possible, soak fireworks overnight in a bucket or tub of water. If soaking isn’t an option, thoroughly douse them with a hose or pour water over them using a 5-gallon bucket. Make sure the fireworks are fully saturated.
Don’t rush this step! Even fireworks that look fully shot may still contain live material that could reignite, so soaking them is critical.
3. Dispose of Them Properly
Once the fireworks are fully saturated, it’s time to throw them away safely. While they’re still wet, place the fireworks in plastic bags to trap the moisture inside. Put the bagged fireworks in your trash can or dumpster for collection.
Never burn used fireworks! Even soaked fireworks can relight unexpectedly. Burning them may activate any live material still inside, which can lead to serious injuries.
Also, never place fireworks directly into the trash can without cooling and soaking. This can cause fires in your trash can, or even inside the garbage truck, putting others at risk.
Celebrate Safely
Fireworks are meant to be enjoyed, but you can enjoy them even more knowing they’re being disposed of safely. Taking a few extra minutes to cool, soak, and properly dispose of your fireworks is the best way to protect yourself, your audience, and your local sanitation workers.
Look out for yourself and others, and celebrate the safe way!
